ICC 24m Certification

Path to ICC 24m Certification

Earn the International Certificate of Competency through Big Blue Sailing’s Sail Canada curriculum

If you’re planning to charter a sailboat in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, or most of Europe, you’ll be asked for proof of competency — most commonly the International Certificate of Competency (ICC). Many charter companies and harbour authorities require it before they’ll hand over the keys.

Big Blue Sailing offers a direct path to the ICC 24m (Sail) certificate, built entirely on Sail Canada’s Recreational Boating School curriculum — the same courses you’d take to become a competent, confident cruising sailor here on the BC coast.

The path

  • Basic Cruising — foundational sail handling, boat handling under power and sail, and safety
  • Basic Navigation — chartwork, tides, currents, and passage planning fundamentals
  • Intermediate Cruising — live-aboard skipper and crew skills, daytime passages, docking, anchoring, and vessel systems management, delivered with IYT-aligned performance objectives built in

Because your on-water training already covers the practical competencies IYT requires, all that’s left is completing IYT’s online theory course — done independently, at your own pace, alongside your Sail Canada training with Big Blue Sailing.

Once both are complete, Big Blue Sailing — an IYT-recognized school — verifies your training and sea time and submits your ICC application on your behalf.

What you'll need along the way

  • A VHF radio operator qualification (your Sail Canada ROC(M) qualifies)
  • 200 nautical miles and 10 days logged at sea by the end of training

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this let me charter through Big Blue Sailing?
No — the ICC is a competency credential recognized internationally by charter companies and authorities. Big Blue Sailing’s role is training and certification, delivered as continuing Sail Canada keelboat education.
Bring your logbook and existing certifications to your first course with us — we’ll confirm what already counts toward your 200nm/10-day requirement and VHF prerequisite.
It depends on your existing experience and pace, but most candidates complete Basic Cruising through Intermediate Cruising plus the IYT theory course within one to two sailing seasons.
