Join us for a 2 day Start Keelboat non-liveaboard course sailing out of Canoe Cove, Sidney.  The course is all on the water and will teach the basics of cruising, sail handling, anchoring and some navigation.

Objective:  to be able to sail safely as the crew of a sloop-rigged keelboat 6 to 12 meters with an outboard or inboard motor in 5 – 20 knots (not gusting over 25 knots) of wind by day. This Standard is ideal for individuals with limited on-water experience.  The focus is on the initial development of practical skills while participating in the operation of a keelboat.

*No prior experience necessary 

Day one:  focuses on the introduction to the sailboat, understanding and fitting the PFD.  Learning the names of the various standing & running rigging, helping prepare the boat for the day with a focus on the safety items needed. Preparing for the weather. Handling the ropes and fenders at the dock, anchoring techniques. Sailing the various points of sail.

Day two:  focuses on the reintroduction of the routine of preparing the boat.  Improving on the skills listed on day one.  Preparing the boat for sailing, reading the weather, finer points of sail, crew overboard, tying most common sailing knots.
